Injured Wolves & Griffly Bears [Reaver]

It had been two days since Maisie had seen Griffin. She had faced her brother, having no other choice due to the arrangement they had, and plead with him to leave Griffin alone. She had performed, as scheduled, but afterward had been forced to accompany her brother to his home, where he lived with a few other young men. Muggles, from what she gathered, though of course she didn't ask.

To be honest, she was just glad to be distracting Warner from thinking about Griffin or their altercation from the other night. She was lured into a false sense of security on the matter when he didn't speak of it for several hours, appearing to be enjoying himself with his mates and seeming in a rather good mood--apparently Maisie had made him quite a lot of money that night from her performance.

Things took an ugly turn, however, when an especially dark looking lad arrived at the flat. He and Warner disappeared into a room, leaving Maisie to see to it that the others were taken care of in his absence. She wanted to go home but was, instead, forced to serve her brother's gang beverages. After only half an hour, the man strode out and gave Maisie a dark look, though he carried on to the door and then left. His stare had been so cold, she couldn't help but shiver.

That was over three hours ago, though.

The phone in Griffin's home rang. Joy Barrington answered, taking a message for her grandson before hanging up the phone. She found him, knocking gently. "Griffin. St. Mungo's Hospital has just called. They said someone listed you as their emergency contact... a Maisie Wolfe?" she asked him. "Is that a sweetheart of your's?"

He was miserably failing to make the rest of the holiday a good one, as he found himself wondering about her often. It was funny, he hadn't thought of her for days, then the flyer, now Griffin couldn't stop thinking about her, and about him. The young man could hardly stand it to leave Maisie all alone in her flat a few nights earlier, but he hadn't had much of a choice.

It was unlike Griffin for be locked away in his room, but to keep from having to explain things to his grandparents, he hid away in hopes they would write it off as teenage moodiness. They were worried, but he was known for brooding, so they thought it as most likely the case. The thoughts of her just wouldn't leave him be. Was she alright? Rubbing his chin, he dragged his thumb over the spot on his jawline where her lips had touched. If only he knew a little more about where she lived besides only, in Kent, he could have would have paid her a visit. Unfortunately, it looked as though he would be left wondering until the return to school.

The ringing phone woke him up from a half-sleep. It wasn't neither loud nor was he required to answer it, but he had been startled awake nonetheless. The padding of footsteps down the hallway had him sitting up, and he was fully alert by the time his grandmother hit the door. "Maisie." He repeated, his heart, stomach and jaw dropping. "St. Mungos? Nan, I've got to go." "Griffin, dear," protested Joy as Griffin grabbed his coat from the back of a wooden chair and pushed past her, nearly running towards the door. "Somethin'a matter, boy?" Asked Melvin from the chair in the television room. "A friend may be hurt." He answered quickly, shoving his feet into the a pair of shoes that had been neatly placed beside the door. "The call box outside the park will take you there, dear." Joy explained, as Griffin had never been to the wizarding hospital. "That one will take you to St. Mungos. You may dissaparate in the house this once to get there. Please be careful." Griffin kissed his grandmother's cheek and disappeared from the flat.

Once inside the hospital, Griffin all but ran to the first desk he found. "I'm looking for Maisie Wolfe. Is she here? Is she alright?" A squatty ginger witch peeked over her bright red, plastic framed glasses and smacked her gum loudly. "Name?" She squeaked, giving him the once over. "Griffin Barrington. I'm listed as her... Emergency contact?" "Is that a question, or are you?" Griffin was becoming agitated. "Is she here, or isn't she?" He demanded, leaning over the desk in an intimidating manner. He would feel bad later for being rude to a stranger, but right now, there were more important things. He was given directions to find her, and made his way to her room, where he knocked first then poked his head in "Maisie?"He asked, his worst fear coming alive in front of him.

No sooner had he located her room than did a Healer appear in front of him, barring him. There was a curtain around the bed where one would assume Maisie was laying. The Healer, a man in his mid-to-late twenties, placed a firm but gentle hand on Griffin's shoulder to give him pause, then gestured for him to step back into the hallway.

The Healer carefully closed the door behind him, then turned to Griffin. "Griffin Barrington?" he guessed, still holding Maisie's paperwork in hand. Once it was confirmed, he continued. "Our records showed she had no surviving or known family listed, so in that event, it's traditional for us to bring in the Emergency Contact in severe cases."

It certainly bode no good that the Healer was speaking in a gentle, quiet tone. A person could go mad at a patient Healer or doctor who was taking his time getting to the point where it concerned a loved-one's health. All the same, they were trained to discuss things in this manner, and so the Healer was keeping a slow, calming (or it was meant to be) pace as he watched Griffin's face for any distress. Of course, with a big lad like Griffin, fainting was pretty much out of the question.

"She came in about an hour ago with severe injuries. Three broken ribs, a broken arm, several abrasions and minor wounds," he finally told Griffin. "We were, of course, able to repair the physical damage. Her bones are still mending, so she's in considerable pain, but she should be in tact by morning."

It might seem that was the worst of it, but judging by the Healer's tone and expression, this was only a lead up to the worst news and he wanted to make sure Griffin was digesting that before getting to it.

The nurse had caught him off guard, appearing out of nowhere, as it were. Griffin's heart skipped two or three beats, but somehow he managed to keep an air of composure about him. “Yeah.” He answered, practically cutting off the nurse. It wasn't meant as a rude gesture, of course. Griffin knew it was simple protocol, but honestly, if Maisie had used him as an emergency contact, then who else were they expecting.

It didn't make sense that he had even been listed as her emergency contact. Griffin had spent a lot of time and energy pursuing Maisie, to be all but cut down by her. He only wanted to get to know her, yet that seemed damned near impossible. It was natural that he was confused by all of her actions, especially this one. Nevertheless, he was going to be here for this girl, because he genuinely cared for her.

Hearing her injuries wrenched at his gut, but he remained stone faced. Maisie was injured. Wounds could always heal, but this was something more than just injuries. It was a little convenient. Come to think of it, it was a little too convenient. “What exactly happened to her?” He asked, letting his imagination get the best of him. Griffin had a good hunch, but it was better for him not to have to speculate.

Though it wasn't common place for a young witch to have a young wizard as her emergency contact, the Healer was relieved to deal with someone who seemed composed rather than a hysterical mother or an outraged father. The only reason they had even permitted Griffin to be the contact was that Maisie's records showed that she was orphaned, thus they could assume she had no blood relations unless she provided otherwise. Which she clearly hadn't.

"We really can't be certain of the assaulter, Mr. Barrington. If we were, please trust that they would be in very serious trouble."

The Healer pursed his lips, regarding Griffin, then spoke carefully. "Miss Wolfe was a victim of one of the Unforgivable Curses. The use of magic in a Muggle populated area alerted authorities. By the time an Auror arrived, Miss Wolfe's attacker had already disappeared. Due to these circumstances, an Auror will need to speak with you."

The Healer looked apologetic, understanding that Griffin would likely be more interested in seeing the patient than speaking to an Auror. "She endured the Cruciatus Curse. She seems stable but we'll be monitoring her mental activity for a few days, to be sure of what damage was done to her brain. It seems likely that the curse only lasted a moment, which is certainly good news."

He stepped aside, nodding. "Go on inside. I'll let the Auror know you're in there."

The thought of an Unforgivable Curse had always been just that to Griffin. As far as he, or most magical kids were concerned, the Unforgivables were just something parents used to scare their children into being good. Of course, he wasn't daft, he knew they were real, and had even seen one being used on a poor spider in third year, but they still didn't seem real. They couldn't have been something that wizards used on other wizards. That was just wrong.

"Cruciatus." he repeated, wrapping his brain around the idea. There was no way Maisie could have possibly done anything to deserve a punishment as bad as that. He was beginning to realize just how bad the situation had become. But why? Surely Warner wasn't just a sorry bastard for no good reason. Or perhaps he was, the foul sod. Griffin decided that the rotten wizard needed the taste of a good, stiff fist, instead of hiding behind magic. What a coward he, or anyone was for hurting such an innocent thing.

Disregarding the healer, Griffin nodded and continued into the room. The sight of her wasn't as bad as he had dreaded. Maisie looked in tact. That was the beauty of magic. Approaching her, the young wizard sighed deeply, looking her over, then sank into a chair beside her bed, and cleared his throat. The last thing he wanted to do was startle her.

Maisie's bones were mending, thanks to some disgusting but effective potions, and she had been given a little sedative to stave off the excruciating pain of her bones reforming themselves properly. It was actually an almost unbearable process, but the sedative had done wonders for the most part. That, and a pain potion.

No sooner had Griffin found a seat beside the bed than did a wizard in deep blue robes stride in. He looked very stern, a man in his late forties, and extremely serious. His greeting to Griffin was a curt nod. "I'm Ratticus Spat, the Auror assigned to this case. We're assuming the message left at the scene to be for you." He handed Griffin a moving picture which showed Maisie in a far worse state on a concrete ground with letters floating above her which read: "Property of the Brick Lane Massive."

The Auror seemed to be watching Maisie rest while Griffin examined the photograph, then he explained. "This is very bad news, Mr. Barrington. You see, the Brick Lane Massive is a very dangerous gang. Up until today, considered a muggle gang. If there are wizards now in league with these barbarians, that means a lot of trouble for everyone. Do you have anything to tell me about the gang? Are you involved? Now, consider this girl's life, Mr. Barrington. Lying to me about your involvement with the gang is only going to put her in more danger."

He looked very grave, but also somewhat tired. He shook his head a fraction, then sighed. "We think the warning was for you. It appears they took someone you cared about and used her to communicate to you some cryptic message. Up until only a handful of hours before Miss Wolfe's attack, she had no file with St. Mungo's. Someone called in and updated all of her information in the hospital's records to include you as the contact."

Once Griffin had responded to all of the Auror's inquiries, Ratticus Spat took his leave to (we should hope) further investigate the crime. A nurse came in and checked on Maisie, then Griffin was finally left alone with her and his own thoughts. It was a good while later that she stirred, wincing a little and slowly opening her eyes in visible confusion. "Wha... where am I?" she asked groggily, utterly baffled as to what was going on or why Griffin was there. But.... she was glad that if someone was there, it was him.

No sooner than he hit the chair, he was standing back up as an authoritative wizard entered the room. He knew they were just doing their jobs, but Griffin was on edge, and if these people didn't stop popping up out of nowhere... Luckily this wizard was the Auror, and in good time too. There were so many questions buzzing through his mind.

He made to start with the questions, but the Auror was passing over a picture, an account of sort of what had happened to Maisie. Griffin took his time studying the picture. There was something familiar about the words, but he couldn't quite place it. Perhaps he had read them in the muggle papers. "Property of the Brick Lane Massive?" he finally read aloud, to which Ratticus Spat took the opportunity to provide another answer. Then it made sense. "Fuck." He mumbled to himself, then shook his head. "I've only heard about them from muggle media, the papers and telly. Not much, though. You only really hear of victims in the muggle world, especially by these tossers. They don't hang around, so if I were involved, I wouldn't be here."

The Auror was required to cover his bases, thus asking such questions, but what Griffin needed to know was why. Spat seemed to have an answer to that, too, and it was the most disturbing part. "What?" He choked, not really as a question, rather as a gross realization, then quickly recovered. "I see." Griffin was suddenly involved in a serious situation which he would have never before imagined, all over fancying a girl. His involvement hadn't been purpose, but if they wanted a fight, well, looks like they had a fighter. Animals like the members of the Brick Lane Massive didn't deserve this or any kind of victory, and it wasn't going to happen again. Griffin was going to personally see to this.

His attention turned back to Maisie as the Spat took his leave. He sank back into the chair, his eyes fixed on her for a good while. A nurse came in in and milled around for a brief period of time, but Griffin hardly noticed, almost in a trance-like state. This wasn't fair at all, poor Maisie didn't deserve this. No one did, and those arseholes thought they were really getting away with something. Not this time.

Maisie began stirring and Griffin scrambled to his feet. "Hey," He softly swept a few strands of hair from her face, then placed his hand gently on her arm. "You're alright, love. We're at St. Mungo's."

Her head was swimming, eyes a little cloudy from being disoriented. She was only acutely aware of the pain surging through her like a terrible force. Maisie had never broken a bone before, so she really didn't know enough about it to surmise that she was healing bones, but she definitely knew something was very wrong with the state of her health.

"Griffin," she whispered, not sure why he was there but feeling a rush of gratitude and relief at the sight of him. Whatever she had been through, she knew she was safe now. Griffin wouldn't let anything hurt her if he was there. She knew that.

"How..." she started, but her voice felt strange to her, so she tried again. "How did you know I was here? How did I get here?"

A wave of relief rushed over him as Maisie spoke. This was real. She was at least halfway coherent, she was going to be okay. Griffin's eyes scanned her face for signs of distress. If he could, he would have taken her pain and hurled it back at Warner. The feeling of hate had never been one that Griffin felt towards anyone, until now.

She was struggling to speak, and he wanted to tell her not to, to save her energy, but hearing her speak was comforting. He was being slightly selfish by wanting to hear her voice, but was unapologetic. He needed her voice.

"You were hurt." That was a huge understatement, and he felt silly, but it was all he could offer at the time. "I don't know how you got here, and..." Come to think of it, he wasn't sure how anyone knew how to find him. Griffin suddenly found himself frightened for his grandparents. What if they were also in danger? "The hospital contacted me." It was the best he could do. Now he had even more questions. "The Healers said you're going to be alright."
