An Occupied Mind

Athena had been waiting a solid week for the letter she was currently buried nose-deep in. She didn't notice the soft crackle of the fire, nor did she care that everyone else had already gone to bed. She was wide awake and secretly thrilled to hear from her father. He always seemed so far away when she was at school.

She brushed her light autumn bangs out of her eyes and gently laid the folded sheet of paper on her lap while she looked around absentmindedly. Her unfinished school-work was laid out before her on the table. She figured the silly essay on dragons' role in ancient potions could wait... Or maybe it would even write itself if she waited long enough.

Now that I know father's doing well, I should probably get back to the grind... But it's so late. Why am I still up, even?

The girl shook her head slowly, looking down embarrassed and smirking; a realization that she was thinking too much again. Those habits always kept her up for no reason at all.

He didn't sleep so well at night anymore. He tried. It just didn't come. It was like that for a lot of people that fought in the last battle. It was even harder because Hogwarts had been his home. The place where he'd had his first kiss was also the place he'd killed a man. Whenever his mind flashed to Hogwarts, he saw everything, both good and bad. The war ravaged the pleasant school memories, and the pleasant school memories made it that much more difficult for him to banish the horrors of war to a dark corner of his mind.

He got up quietly and slipped out of the dormitory, making his way down to the common room. The fire usually helped him feel tired. It seemed like the one part of the castle that wasn't somehow tainted. Fire meant home. Fire meant he could rest.

The first thing Jesse noticed when he entered the common room was that he wasn't alone. There was a girl sitting up with what seemed to be her schoolwork. She seemed unfamiliar. She had to be at least 16, so he must have seen her around before. Then again, a good chunk of his classmates had been forced to take the previous year off and go into hiding. Also, Jesse was 18 and repeating the year. However he figured, she was basically two years below him, which just seemed odd when he realized it.

He cut across to a long blue sofa and allowed himself to collapse upon it.

He called up from the sofa, "Can't sleep either?"

She didn't bother to look up when she heard footsteps in the distance, making their way into the Common Room. Athena anticipated another stranger who had simply left behind a book or was making a strange or unquestioned midnight-run. The school had begun to house seemingly strange or even haunted students now-a-days.

She was not startled or surprised when the stranger made themselves comfortable; Hogwart's is everyone's home, after all. She hoped he had not noticed her simply because she was enjoying being in her own world, but she also wanted a distraction. Her mind wandered and lingered in the past most of the time.

When addressed by the lad, she sat up straight and looked down. Eye contact was difficult for her, as she saw how the eyes betrayed one's inner emotions. Clearing her throat quietly and shuffling a few papers, she answered him:

"Not at all. One of those nights, I suppose."

Picking up her quill, she scribbled down a bit of nonsense on the blank parchment before her.

If my social skills are less than adequate, I can at least blame it on being preoccupied, she thought to herself. Athena had a silly way of over-thinking just about everything, so covering all the bases was something she was rather good at.
